WISPECO INSTITUTE LEARNERSHIPS

A Learnership is a training programme that is a mixture of on-the-job practical training and theoretical education and training. In addition to teaching a trade or skill, Learnerships also help to improve basic reading and maths as well as some computer skills. It also teaches one how to deal with practical workplace problems and how to work better in teams. Upon completing all the Unit Standards required, a qualification is obtained which is recognised throughout the country. This qualification, depending on the NQF level, can be equivalent to a general grade 9, 10, 11 or matriculation certificate, a higher education diploma or even a degree.

Wispeco Alluminium currently offers 3 learnerships on different levels:

Manufacturing and Assembly Learnership - NQF 1 level

Fabrication Learnership - NQF 2 level

Supervision Learnership - NQF 3 level

Wispeco Institute offers this Learnership to 20 of our full-time employees and 10 unemployed people, previously disadvantaged. The unemployed learners are on site full time where they are learning about manufacturing in the workplace. This practical Learnership runs for 12 months and the qualification is equivalent to a Grade 9 General Education and Training Certificate.

This Learnership, equivalent to Secondary School Grade 10, has 21 full time students, previously unemployed and from disadvantaged backgrounds. They will be spending most of their time in the workshop, learning how to put together various kinds of aluminium windows and doors. They are also learning basic mathematics, communication and other life skills they will need to operate in the workplace. Upon completing this Learnership, these students will be sent out as skilled labourers and will either work for other companies or even open up their own businesses.

73 of our full time employees, mainly our managers on different levels, are on this Learnership programme. They are learning various management skills from forming vision & goals, to empowering, motivating and coaching their team. They also learn how to deal with challenging situations like coping with change, conflict and problem solving skills. They receive training every Thursday and have various practical assignments and assessments as part of their learning programme. The qualification is equivalent to a Further Education and Training Certificate.
